We are unique in that we are an advocate of Slow Fashion, and we design Bshirts intentionally to adapt a woman's existing clothes to be breastfeeding and pregnancy friendly by being worn as a layer under normal clothes. In this way, customers are able to buy fewer maternity clothes, saving them money and reducing clothing waste.
83% of our customers report that the unique Bshirt design helps them to feel more comfortable breastfeeding in front of other people as there is less on show. Our Social Enterprise’s Mission is to empower women to breastfeed confidently in public whilst reducing clothing waste.
Over the last five years, we designed our own range of ethical breastfeeding clothes that are high quality garments in classic colours, which can be worn from season to season and never go out of style. They are packaged in plastic-free home compostable garment bags to minimise their impact on the environment.
We are a Circular Fashion British Maternity Brand, which empowers women to breastfeed with confidence while reducing unnecessary consumption of earth's precious natural resources.
“We are proud to be a micro brand tackling the world's big problems.”

We regularly receive returned Bshirt's that are in excellent condition, but are not able to be resold as new. Rather than send these items to landfill - where 300k tonnes of clothing waste goes to in the UK every year - we have carefully selected the best of the items for our Certified Pre Loved collection.
PreLoved stock will vary due to availability.
Terms and Conditions for the Bshirt’s PRE-LOVED COLLECTION:
By placing an order for an item in our Pre-Loved Collection, you agree to accept the following terms and conditions:
1. Items in the Pre-Loved Collection are second hand, but in a resalable condition. Items will show signs of wear and tear, which may include faults within the product itself, staining, discolouration, shrinkage, or other issues arising as the result of the item being second hand.
2. All prices are subject to changes at any time.
3. Stock may vary and exchanges of pre-loved items may not be possible.
We're a Slow Fashion Brand
As fashion directors, we were shocked to learn that fashion is responsible for 10% of global carbon emissions!
The fashion industry:
- is responsible for 10% of global carbon emissions
- sends 350k tonnes of clothes to landfill in the UK each year
- is the second biggest consumer of water worldwide
- is responsible for 20% of the world's water pollution
Reduce: Buy less, wear better
It's really simple - we all need to wear clothes. But buying fast fashion isn't sustainable or responsible. Maternity and breastfeeding clothes are intentionally designed for short term use, adding to the clothing waste disaster. We believe that Slow Fashion is the solution we desperately need in order to buy less and wear better.
Reuse: Buy pre-loved
Shop from our certified PreLoved collection to save money and reduce clothing waste.
Recycle: We will Buy Back your Bshirts!
Your Bshirt is a quality garment and designed to last several years. When your breastfeeding days are over (sob) you can either pass it on to a friend or send it back via our Buy Back scheme, and get 10-30% back to spend on something new.
We cannot continue to consume and create waste at the current rate if we are to preserve this planet for our children’s future. Working together, we will improve breastfeeding rates in the UK, reduce clothing waste, and ultimately make mums and babies healthier and happier.
We are a Social Enterprise, with a Profit with Purpose business model. This means that we hold our Social and Environmental Impacts as important as we hold making a profit. We are unique in that we are a company limited by shares, but we have a self-imposed asset lock on our profits, and a social lock on our mission. We feel all businesses should operate in this way - by considering the impact their products have on the environment, on making their customer’s lives better, as well as the bottom line.
Social and Environmental Impact
Our Impact Report will be available at the end of 2022.
We are working with Low Carbon Devon to measure our CO2 emissions. The project involves a 'cradle-to-grave' life cycle assessment of our products, it will also involve identifying carbon reduction strategies and where improvements can be made in the short, medium and long-term.
Our Social Enterprise has established itself as committed to empowering women to breastfeed with confidence. Our customer survey shows that:
- 84% of 1,500 customers surveyed felt more confident feeding in front of others while wearing their Bshirt.
- 79% of women we surveyed found breastfeeding easier while wearing their Bshirt.
- 68% reported reduced social isolation and improved mental health as a result of being able to breastfeed in public whenever necessary, with minimised stress and embarrassment.
- 80% of our customers report they want to be part of the Circular Economy
- 90% report that ethical clothes are too expensive and they are interested in renting as an alternative to buying for economic and environmental reasons.
- By using recycled cotton instead of conventional, we will be reducing CO2 emissions and using less water
- By renting used clothing, we will be further reducing emissions and water usage
- By recycling our garments back into fibres, we reduce the amount of clothing going to landfill
- We will partner with specialist organisations to accurately measure and report on our environmental impact.
- This will include a detailed analysis of our emissions and water usage, before and after our pivot to circular fashion.
The GlobalData, 2021 Thredup Resale Report included the following stats around a single garment of clothing - used vs new:
- Carbon Emissions (Ib of CO2e) are 21.1 new and 3.7 used
- Energy Demand (kw of Energy) is 38.8 new and 4.8 used
- Water use (gallons of water) is 78.5 new and 1.2 used
When Lisa was volunteering as a breastfeeding peer supporter, she saw many women wearing intricate, expensive maternity clothing, and it was getting in the way of establishing breastfeeding. She suggested that these women could simply cut big holes in a t-shirt and wear that under normal clothes. The ones who took Lisa’s advice found it was much easier to get a good latch and their confidence increased as they wore the home sewn t-shirts with their regular clothes and felt like themselves again.
Philippa met Lisa at baby yoga and saw this fantastic top Lisa was wearing. Philippa was astounded to learn Lisa had made it herself! Philippa felt that there might be something in this breastfeeding top - so they decided to launch a business! Together, they perfected the design of their Lift the Flap breastfeeding vest, which is design protected, and launched a business in 2017.
Lisa is a mum of two boys: Nico (11) and Xavi (8) and breastfed for a total of 4 years.
Philippa is a mum of two boys: Albie (11) and Brandon (8) and breastfed for a total of 4 years.
"We decided to launch a business to set our own hours and be available to our kids on our own terms. We each have a different set of professional and personal skills we bring to the table and we really compliment each other well. As we are friends, to say that we have a business partnership isn’t really enough - it’s more like a sisterhood."
The Bshirt has been trading for 6 years and has impacted over 50,000 women worldwide. As social entrepreneurs Lisa and Philippa are always meeting people who started social ventures that are making a real difference to our society and the environment. It’s an inspirational time to be a businesswoman. But as fashion directors, they were shocked to learn that fashion is responsible for 10% of global carbon emissions!
They hope that one day all companies who sell products to mothers and babies will think of how they can improve the lives of their customers, rather than exploiting them with ‘must have’ consumerism. We cannot continue to consume and create waste at the current rate if we are to preserve this planet for our children’s future. Working together, we will reduce clothing waste, improve breastfeeding rates in the UK and ultimately make mums and babies healthier and happier.
