Exercise and Breastfeeding

You may be feeling ready to get back to personal fitness after the birth of your baby... But is it okay to exercise while breastfeeding?

The short answer is, YES! Exercising is beneficial for both your mind and body, but here are a few tips to consider when incorporating fitness into your breastfeeding lifestyle.

Recover from birth first:

Firstly, it's important to take it easy during your recovery period following birth. Typically it's suggested that you wait at least six weeks after birth, as recommended by most physicians, before beginning any type of exercise program. Once your doctor puts you in the clear, its go time!

Listen to your body:

Begin your program slowly and listen to your body. Don't over do it and be sure to pace yourself. Bear in mind that it took 40 weeks to get your body to its state of giving birth and it may also take some time to reach your personal fitness goals. It's important to remember that if you notice any pain, discomfort or perhaps clogged ducts, this is a signal to slow down and take it easy.

Nurse before exercising:

You may find that it helps to nurse right before you exercise; it can be more comfortable than if your breasts are full. This can also help combat the salty taste from sweat.

Drink, drink, drink!

Even more so than usual, hydration is key. Be sure to drink before, during and after working out to replace any lost fluids.

Clothing:

You don't have to wear the latest gym clothes, but a Bshirt would be useful so you can easily and accessibly feed just before and just after your workout. No frills, no fuss! It's also a good idea to pick up a comfortable and supportive sports bra. This will help to support your enlarged breasts while running, jumping or moving around.
